Orphan (2009)

Imdb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1148204/
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
Cast: Peter Sarsgaard, Vera Farmiga, Isabelle Fuhrman

I'd like to thank Conan O' Brien for introducing this movie to me; I happened to catch an interview of Peter Sarsgaard, who was promoting the movie on late night. Orphan is definitely one of the best Horror/Thriller movies of 2009. It is so much better than this years competitors like Friday 13th, Prom Night, Jennifers body (worst movie i have seen in a while), etc.

So i guess the question arises to; what makes this movie stand out? considering the Cast and the Director (House of Wax) are relatively unknown. The Acting and direction is what carries this movie, Isabelle Fuhrman (Esther) gives by far the best performance compared to rest of the ensemble. She plays a mature, serene, creep-ishly polite orphan that is adopted by a family. Her transition form the ideal child to a dark psychopath is simply amazing and is definitely award worthy. I would be astonished if she wasn't nominated for some award.
This movie has an interesting plot, but even though it may initially seem like it lacks originality, it will surprise you as the movie progresses. This is where the direction plays a vital role in character development and scene progression. The movies starts out with a slow pace but gradually picks up. This is not of those gory horror flicks, it is rather intelligent and well-scripted. It is not a very scary movie but it is a good thriller that will demand your attention. This movie also gives an idea of what goes through the minds of parents wishing to adopt, and how the rest of the family copes with the change.

I loved the tag line of the movie; There is something wrong with Esther! The question is can you figure it out? This is one thriller that will keep you guessing and you will finally be shocked at what you learn. Orphan has become one of my favorite horror/thrillers movies, so i would recommend that everyone gives it a chance. You wont be disappointed. I would rate this movie with a 4/5 stars.
